High School Friends Visit

[22-24, June, 2024]

A couple of high school friends now living in the East Coast (Philly and NYC), Terry and Lito visited for a weekend of reconnecting and of course, eating up. It was a great time to catch up amid several lavish and fun meals as is customary with Filipino get-togethers. Short visit, but long on memories to always cherish.

Visitors from Michigan

[6-8 June, 2024]

94-year old Aunt Nora and cousin Kay came down from Michigan for their annual spring-time visit to Ohio. Of course, get-togethers with lots of Filipino food.

K BBQ Get-Together

[1 June, 2024]

Korean BBQ for family dinner this past weekend. And what vaguely looked like a volleyball game broke out in the front yard.

K BBQ in the backyard.

Volleyball game (?) in the front yard.

Memorial Weekend Happenings

[25-27 May, 2024]

Many events and happenings converging over the Memorial Weekend, with Kaori’s 5th birthday, Yui’s church confirmation, and Vernon and Luanne arriving from California for a week’s visit to Ohio. Of course, many get-togethers involving plenty of food.

Ramen Night

Went out with my “ramen gang” last night and had our usuals at our favorite Columbus ramen hangout, Meshikou.

A Week of Birthday Celebrations

[12-21 April, 2024]

My niece and I celebrated birthdays 6 days apart, and it turned out to be a series of food celebrations and get-togethers comprising dinners, breakfasts, and brunches over a couple of consecutive weekends. Deliciously fun times!

Cooking and Baking Through Winter's Doldrums

It’s cold and gray out, and I’ve been trying to beat the winter blues by cooking and baking some of my favorites, several definitely taking cues from Filipino cuisine.

"Breakfast Club" Holiday Get-Together

[31 December, 2023]

A potluck dinner with my breakfast club gang closes out the year with a ‘flavor’ bang! Lots of gluten-free fare and fine bourbon cocktails highlighted the evening, just before the ball dropped in Times Square.

Autumn Celebrations and Delectable Delights

Fall season birthdays, new dishes, family visits, and other celebrations.

Basque Burnt Cheesecake

Still feeling Spain vibes, whipped up a 10” pan of Basque Burnt Cheesecake this past weekend.

Weekend Visitors from Chicago

[10 June, 2023]

More family from Chicago visited with us over the weekend. Another excuse for a food gathering and some downtown gallivanting.

Memorial Day Outing

[29 May, 2023]

Lunch at 5 Guys and sugary treats at Dragon Donuts.

Birthday Celebrations

[14 and 20 April, 2023]

Kasey’s and my birthdays are only a few days apart so it’s been a foodie flurry of lunches and dinners the past couple of weekends. Here’s to celebrating completing another revolution around our closest star!

Recent Eats

A sampling of most recent notable eats.

KFC (Korean Fried Chicken)

So, there’s a new Korean fried chicken place in town: 92 Chicken in downtown Delaware, OH. Tried the Half Traditional Crispy Fried Soy Garlic Chicken. It was very good!

More Holiday Cooking

[26-27 December, 2022]

In continuation of my holiday culinary adventures, I made some shrimp sushi bake cups, a variation on the popular sushi bakes. I also prepared more fruity, Christmassy pavlovas for my next-door neighbors.

A Christmas Bread Wreath

[22 December, 2022]

I made a simple-recipe cheesy, garlicky, and buttery bread wreath - a proper Christmas snack!

Weekend with Family

[24-25 September, 2022]

My final weekend in town was spent with family, and guess what? More food! On Saturday, it was lunch at a Japanese izakaya restaurant, and dinner at home where we enjoyed a home-cooked meal (main dish of roasted pork with pineapple sauce courtesy of me!). Then on Sunday, it was brunch at La Luna Cafe with the nephews, and I closed out the day with a date at The Spa with my niece while a tropical storm raged outside.

Pan-Asian Eats

[17-19 September, 2022]

A weekend that started with the community street food market led to an unintentional foodie tour of Southeast Asia. First, it was a family dinner at Nanbantei, an izakaya-style Japanese restaurant in the Greenbelt shopping, dining, and entertainment area.

The following day, it was lunch with a close childhood friend of mine and his lovely wife at Mango Tree, supposedly the best Thai restaurant in BGC.

Later in the evening, my nieces prepared some of my favorite home cooked Filipino dishes for a wonderful dinner replete with family nostalgia.

And finally, on Monday, it was another family lunch, this time at Tim Ho Wan, Hongkong’s Makati branch of their world-famous 1-Michelin star dim sum restaurant.

All told, a wonderful weekend of Asian-style small plates cuisine, shared and enjoyed with loved ones.
